A graduate of Otago with a major in ceramics, Gabby currently works with watercolour, pigment and mixed media on paper and canvas. She is drawn to the liquid qualities of such medium as a natural progression from glazes.
Her work could be interpreted as decorative but Gabby weaves stories into her images based on her life experience as a trans-racial, Chinese adoptee with imagery referencing both Asian and European influences. Many of Gabby's images are of things she has have found in Sydney: a joyful and chaotic assemblage of blooms and fruit arranged in a variety of Chinese ceramics but with a narrative that draws the viewer in for a second look. Gabby has lived and worked in the UK and currently resides in Sydney. She has works in public and private collections globally. |
The sum of us: still life deconstructed: blue
As Chinese adoptees we are united by a common thread - our ‘Chineseness’ and our ‘westernness’.But that’s where it ends. We are all different. Our situations, personalities and life experiences are different – there’s no good or bad it’s just who we are. However, as a group of people we are also very different from same race adoptees and Chinese children who have grown up in their own families. The blue/pink flowers signify our adoptee experiences: they vary wildly but are no less ‘beautiful’ or important to the image. Our common thread is represented by the Tourist knickknack porcelain cups purchased in Shanghai.
